History

In God’s Pocket: The History of Our Lady of the Ozarks Shrine presents the remarkable story of the only Catholic shrine in Arkansas. It tells how, on the eve of World War II in the remote Boston Mountains of Winslow, visionaries led by a former nun came together in their quest to build both a home for the Blessed Sacrament and a shrine dedicated to the Mother of God. Through its uncertain beginnings and the often challenging years that follow, the sturdy native stone chapel continues to welcome people of all faiths and to offer worshippers the opportunity to discover the power of the Holy Spirit through contemplation, prayer, and the sacrament of the Mass. Personal pilgrimages through the statuary on the Shrine’s outdoor grounds are encouraged. The Shrine is a holy and tranquil place, and its scenic mountain views offer visitors a chance to pause and to find peace and solace there.

To tell the Shrine’s story, this full-color book draws upon historic photos, documents, and artifacts recovered and discovered from parish and diocesan archives. In God’s Pocket: The History of Our Lady of the Ozarks Shrine, by Mary Ann Kahmann & Juana Young, is available at Amazon.com for $17 plus shipping.
